Sad Sad Sad

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I have a little knowledge and done a dangerous thing. And killed my TomTom Sad Sad

Not realising that TomTom Home had a back-up facilty, I tried doing it my way, but instead of copying the blooming thing, i've moved it from the sat nav itself Sad

Tried putting it all back but some bits wont copy over and now it just wont work.

I've tried updating it, speaking to it nicely and throwing it around the room, but still wont work.

Any suggestions VERY much appreciated!!!

OK. What bits won't copy over and what error messages do you get?

The more you can tell us about EXACTLY what you did, what happened next, what error messages you get both on the TomTom and on the PC, and any names of files folders etc, will all help to give us an idea of what to do next (and speed up the process hugely!)

Hope that you don't mind if I hijack this post, but ivecodave has spoken for me.

I downloaded the latest cameras and POIs from this site yesterday. We set off on a long journey this morning and I realised that Kate wasn't warning me about cameras. I stopped at a service station and found that there was nothing selected in warnings. I set up the warnings only on the Gatsos as I had the family breathing down my neck. We set off again and the Gatso warnings were working OK. Later on I stopped for petrol. As I was pulling out of the service station, I saw my engine management warning light come on, so I thought, "I'll go via a Vauxhall dealer". I found one in the POI but TT could not find a route. I found a different one and again, could not find a route, in fact, it could not find a route to any of my favourites or home.

I had my laptop with me so I pulled evry file out of TomTom and replaced them with the backup that I took before I installed the camera update. There was no difference, so (remember, THEY are sitting in the back all this time) I packed the laptop away and decided to drive with my brain like in the old days. I mounted it on the windscreen anyway, cos it was still tracking and showing POIs and cameras.

After about 20 miles, I decided to try to navigate and hey presto, it found a route and gave me proper instructions, however, the warnings had disappeared again.

I am now sat in my sons house having tried to move various files etc it is almost completely dead.
It is sitting beside me with just the startup splash screen on. I can connect to the PC and I can see the files and folders in it.
I have tried a reset, but cannot get past the startup screen.

Looking at your signature you are running v8010 system on the 720. I didn't think there was an official version of that out yet for your model. You maybe have some mismatch. Do you have a backup with any earlier system software?

If not try Oldboy's site: http://www.oldboy.me.uk/TomTomUpdates/index.html

Version 8.010 was officially released for the 720 about three months ago and I have been using it daily since then. All my backups are with this system.

Ah! OK. I'm still on an older 700. I must try and keep up!! Embarassed

Which map do you have? The 720 seems to have 2GB of memory. Are you getting near the limit of it? Check the size of the backup.

My backup (copy using Windows Explorer, of course) is 1.81GB.

I see ivecodave never responded to the questions, so presume he sorted it out himself, or just gave up.

Hello Dennis, I've been racking my brains as to why this has suddenly stopped working. sgould has suggested that my operating system is wrong. I have been looking around the site and apparently TT have withdrawn 8.010 earlier this month.
Yesterday, I also connected to TT HOME and updated. Do you think that they have somehow "glitched" me to stop me from using 8.010?
At the moment, I am restoring my oldest back up which is about a month old, if that doesn't work, I don't know what happens next.

I can't imagine TT having the capability to glitch you. That 8.010 is in widespread use, including me on two devices, which I connected and checked for update this week. Although TT withdrew it, they didn't seem to ever issue a "recall" notice, i.e. some publicity telling people not to use it and offering a route to revert to previous version.

It sounds like you are restoring from TT Home backups? - not good!

If you're lucky, you got map v720 by download and it's still available for download (via TT Home) and you can get the application easily enough.

If your restore don't work, cross your fingers.

Thankfully, it is good old Windows "Copy & Paste" backups I am using. The first one didn't work, so I have now ditched everything on the TT to the recycle bin and am trying the oldest backup as a clean install if you like....it's just finished, I'll let you know what happened in a couple of minutes.

Still no good, I disconnected from PC, got the picture of the TomTom with the progress bar moving across the bottom of the screen, which was replaced by the splash screen, normally, it will take about 20 seconds or so to revert to a view of my location, but it is not having it.
Another clue is that the on / off button will not switch it off, I can only do that with the reset button. The on / off button will switch it back on, but as usual it sticks on the splash screen.
Could be a file corrupted or something.
I'm of to bed now as I need to get the car to the garage in the morning, usually, the engine management light costs me about £300 for them to switch it off. Idea Might just take the bulb out.

I lie, I didn't go to bed after all Rolling Eyes
Well it looks fixed, I'll find out properly tomorrow.
I went on HOME and reinstalled my map and application, this left me with a basic working device, with none of my mods on it.
I debated then decided just to paste my last backup on to the device. God helped me 'cos it is, at least usable now. I won't update my cameras or POI until I get back home. Now, I AM going to bed Laughing
