How long does it take roughly to get a lock on a signal?

I'm just outside Guildford (Dump!) and I haven't been able to get any signal lock at all, which is surprising!

Different areas pose different problems, that said the newer receivers are far better than the older versions - far more sensitive. Make sure the aerial wire is at least 5CM from the edge of your windscreen and have you tried driving closer to a transmitter? - I have found that once the device knows the local frequency subsequent lock ons take considerably less time - Mike

Do we know which radio station in the Guildford area transmits iTIS data for TomTom?

As far as I'm aware, The Eagle (96.4) transmits TrafficMaster, although the transmitter is just outside Guildford on top of the Hoggs Back.

I tried running my receiver up the side of the windscreen initially, but moved it to the centre of the windscreen where it gives much better reception.

I aways get a good signal on the south coast but find it goes a few miles up the A3 then it comes back about 10 miles before the M25 past Guilford.

I have run the Ariel under the trim up & along the top of the windscreen.

Perhaps it's too close to the bodywork to receive a signal in poorer areas.

With my receiver down the side of the windscreen, I was getting good reception on the south coast and then nothing - when I moved it to the centre of the windscreen, I was getting good reception in places where previously I had none.

Interesting,

I will try it running up the centre & see what happens. I have a habit of trying to hind any cables in my car but if it gives better reception then I guess I can live with one cable showing Smile

I was trying to keep mine more discreet too, but it seems that reception is better when it runs down the centre.

I haven't been up the A3, but the M3 gives reception the whole way but I was only seeing reception as far as Winchester with the receiver down the side of the windscreen

Well where I live in the Tillingbourne Valley I can see the Hog's Back transmitters, if I go just up the road a bit, so signal strength shouldn't really be a problem.

I think the problem for me is I use the TT swan neck mount as the original mount is *SNIP!* useless & the Proclip isn't wanted as it just looks horrid & blocks airvents.

Positioning the TT so that the cable and "egg" aren't obscuring the windscreen maybe tricky as my car also has athermic glass which could be causing some problems.... Confused

I've left the TT in the house by an open upstairs window & it picks up the satellites & the cable is left to dangle outside in a vertical position & still it picks up nothing! Confused

I'm wondering if I've got a duffer!

I thought having the V8.010 Application would help me get have a better chance of a signal lock, but it seems this isn't to be! Evil or Very Mad

The Athermic Glass will be having a big influence on signal strength/ reception, if you can put the aerial wire on the side window it might improve reception, but to be honest I would consider a DIY modification to either connect it to an external mag mount aerial or splice it to the existing car aerial feed cable as long as this isn't a powered cable some car aerials feed 12V up the coax to the aerial, connect the RDS device to one of these and will damage the device and your TomTom - Mike

That could be purely down to the amount of radio signals in that area.
