I have looked but can't spot an upgrade guide. If there is one I apologise. I have a first generation Tomtom One. I'm getting a 720. The One will be passing on within the family ..I will need to keep it up to date. Before anything goes wrong! are there any computer issues when I connect the new device to the computer/Home and try updating/backing it up eg with the directory structure given I have backups for the One in place and don't want to empty its info from the computer but don't want to screw up backups for both machines Can I/do I, need to create a different directory structure. Home allows saving to a different location but does it recognise two different machines and allow both to be backed up on the same computer?

AND can I minimise the upgrade of the new machine ie I use the traffic camera database with the larger symbols and replaced warning bells and whistles with voices and have downloaded some additional direction voices. Can I simply copy over the additional files in the One voices directory and some parts eg the ogg bmp and 0v2 files in the map directory to make the starting position of the 720 as is in the one?

Firstly, to sort out the issue of TomTom Home you will need to use a different e-mail account for the new device, this is due to the "so called" security they employ, sadly there is no way around this.

For your Home locations and other files required on the new device please create them on the new device, copying the file containing your device setup from the One to a 720 has been known to cause issues in the past and is best avoided - Mike

Mike,
Thank you for the rapid clear and short reply.
Tomtom must realise that customers upgrade. I looked at the 720 manual on line and could not spot any information on upgrading issues.

They don't mind you upgrading. You are allowed to CHANGE the device on an account, but they don't let you have two devices on the SAME account. Also, any maps etc. you have bought STAY with the account they were bought with, so if you keep the old device it is better to leave that account lone and put the new device on the new account.
Seems daft, but it is just the way it is.

As for backups....
Please, please consider using Windows Explorer for your backups, rather than relying on Home.
Firstly, Home has a history of creating rather flaky backups sometimes, which will not restore onto the TomTom - and of course you only find this out when its too late!

Secondly, Home only allows ONE backup at a time now. This is really stupid, because if you do the sensible thing and backup before AND after you do any updating, you end up overwriting your known good backup with something you might find later you don't like or has some problem that wasn't immediately apparent.

Thirdly, using Windows Explorer your question about folder structure for the backups becomes easy.... You can just make master folders for each machine and keep all your backups in those, or just make new folders each time you back one up with names like "720_Backup_2008_07_28" or whatever.

Notes on how to do your backups with Explorer are in the "FAQs" topic in the TomTom section of this forum (see HERE

Andy,
Thank you for the reply.
I had not realised until your reply the changes in relation to home backups. I had found the IE backup FAQ as part of my collating of information ready for the upgrade process but had bookmarked t rather than reading it in detail - I have collated a series of page links in PGPSW for use as part of the initial setup process.

One more daft laddie question. When it arrives - setting up the new account is as simple as - same personal information BUT a different email address and from then Home access is to the right account when you attach either machine to your computer and I can set up bookmarks for the two accounts on my desktop eg for easy access to the two a/cs
