I have been running Hom2.1 for some time with no problems. Today I accepted an invitation to update to 2.3. It uninstalled the old version and installed the new, which started automatically with no problems.
Then I tried to start it using the short cut from the Programs menu and got the following error mesage

HOMERunner.exe failed with Error 5: Access is denied. If this problem persists reinstall from www.tomtom.com/home

It did persist, so I uninstalled using the TomTom uninstaller and downloaded from the TomTom site. This new version brings up the same error message. Also, plugging in my device, switching it on and tapping YES when it asks if I want to connect to the computer will not start TomTom on my PC, as it always did with earlier versions.
I had no problems with earlier updates - any ideas?
Robin

If you watch the Simpsons you would know that anything with "Homer" in the title won't work... Laughing

Slightly more seriously, are you running Windows Vista?

If so, there's a list of Home error messages on the TT website HERE.

where they mention "HOMERunner.exe failed (Vista only)".
They don't give a solution, but suggest you contact them... Rolling Eyes

If none of that is relevant, you could try this:

You might not have deleted all the previous install...
From another post on the same subject:
Quote:
TomTom Home v2 directory within "Documents & Settings/YourUsername/Application Data/TomTom...". I'm not sure of the exact name as I nuked my Home install yesterday.

Note that TomTom by default keeps backup data in there.

Try uninstalling Home, delete any residual "Program Files/TomTom" directory, move the "application data/tomtom" directory somewhere safe as a backup, then re-installing Home.

Well, I don't know what I did, but I uninstalled and reinstalled three times, and the third time it worked (after a fashion), though it seems extraordinarily slow searching for updates. That may be nothing to do with my installation, perhaps the TomTom site is overloaded downloading these cheap maps they are pushing!
Thanks for the reply
Robin

Yeah, that sounds pretty typical for "Home". It doesn't have a terribly good reputation here... (one comment I remember was along the lines of "it is the worst coded piece of c**p I have ever come across")

Yes, you'll have to get used to that too..
I don't think it is anything to do with the maps, although the TT servers have a reputation for the epic time they take too.
No one really knows why these (small) Mapshare updates take so long, (or why it often causes a CPU load of 60-90%!) apart from the "c**p" quote above Laughing , but some people find it manages it quicker if you minimise the program to the taskbar while it is searching.

Robin, can i just ask how long it takes to search for updates, and Andy, how long is 'average'?

Last week it took me more than an hour searching for updates and in the end I cancelled it. I've never had such a long wait before, but it has taken more than 30 minutes before.

Do these times compare with yours Robin?

When I got it last year, updates took 2 minutes if that.

only thing I can suggest is that I have had error messages trying to download updates, or Home not even starting when there hasn't been much free space on C: drive even though Home is installed on my E drive. I seemed to remember last time I needed more than 100MB free before it would download.

Hmm.. not usually that long.
Maybe five to ten minutes is the longest I've sat and watched it and had something finally happen. Any longer than that and it has just sat there "for ever" until I've given up and closed it down.

I've noticed that while it is doing it, it is not actually downloading anything, and if you switch to the page where you choose which countries you want downloads for, it is still trying to decide which countries to use.

Yes, about 10 minutes in my case too. But that's much longer than it took with the previous version 2.1

I have had it take all night and still not finish...

Good thing that most of what I want to do can be done in the file manager!
