Road Device + Memory Map

Hi,
I have used a NavMan PiN 570 for the last 3 years that has now died.
I would like a more robust / waterproof device for use on the hills with Memory map and full post code for on the road , hillwalking / road cycling would be main use

Budget £250 ish

all comments thoughts appreciated

Do you have the Memory Map software to start with? as this could reduce the outlay by a significant amount - A GPS equipped PDA in a waterproof Otter Box or OverBoard case might be the answer without being too costly - Mike

Yes have MM V4 maps thats why i would like to stick with them. I do not navigate via MM but tend to use as a confidence giver, ie walk with 25K os map and check against MM.

Would Garmin Colarado give co-ords as OS XX123456 ?

As you have the maps I would look at purchasing a PDA and run the Memory Map software on it, there are a number of PDA's that have built in GPS receivers and will certainly work better than your old NavPin did.

To prolong the life of the PDA invest in an Otter Box, this will keep the PDA safe from the elements and provide a method to attach it to the bike - see Here . For on road navigation there are quite a number of applications that can be used for GPS based guidance on a PDA, although keeping the whole package price below the £250 would prove a challenge

Forget the Garmin as it won't be able to use your maps, once you have used (and got used to using) the electronic OS maps everything else is second rate to be honest - Mike

The Otter looks good $99 = £45 pricey but would make using PDA less risky on the hills.
starting to get into Geocaching also at the moment

I have the Navman streetsmart road map software also any recommendations on PDA's and will this road map be useable ?

If you want Otterboxes, check USA prices. I bought two, which, even when you include P&P, was nearly the same as buying one in the UK!!!

TotalPDA are selling a IPAQ 214 with TT Nav6 for £279 - that would do all you want, I think.

Or maybe you can find a 2-hand or refurb IPAQ rx5720 (with which I am very happy). I put it in a Aquapaq transparent waterproof case and hang it round my neck when walking
