I have a Go 720 and just purchased the traffic receiver, if I don't sign up to the TomTom traffic subscription will it show me anything or do I have to subscribe?

A Lifetime subscription is usually included in the cost of the reciver for the UK.

Outside the UK there might be a subscription to pay. I would guess no subscription = no information.

Just read this on Amazon website:

"Receive free traffic updates for life! Just plug the RDS-TMC receiver into your TomTom and as soon as a TMC update is received, your TomTom automatically adds the update into your routing, calculates your new journey time and suggests alternative routes"

I was looking at the traffic subscription on the TT wesbite so not sure what the difference is.

Hi,

you dont have to sign up - just plug it in and you get the traffic-info as soon as the green dot is available - Everywhere in Europe, but not in the US, for the US you need a different TMC-receiver.

What you see on the TT-site ist TomTomTraffic, which is a payable service and you get traffic-info via your mobile and in that case you dont need the TMC-Receiver.

There is RDS-TMC which comes with a free lifetime sub included in the price.

There is also HD traffic which only works with the x40 models and has a free 3 month trial and then costs 8 a month after that. The sub also includes other services too...

What you've got there is everything you can buy. Plug in the RDS-TMC traffic receiver and it's just as if you have switched on your car radio, you receive the broadcasts without any further payment. The Amazon splurge is correct - free traffic updates for life (for the life of that receiver and for the life of the transmission of information - so it's like car radio and FM traffic broadcasts) and TomTom 720 can re-route you to avoid traffic problems.

You now have only two possible problems.

First, do you get a signal through the receiver - some people swear at it, others swear by it, so it can vary.

Second, assuming you have a signal, how good is the information you receive. This, TBH, is really the only concern. Traffic information is only as good as the input and transmission - new incidents take time to be transmitted, finished incidents take time to be withdrawn. So you'll always be behind with your updates - half an hour? an hour? who knows. It will make a difference if you don't hear soon enough about the new incident which is going to keep you parked for the next three hours. It will make a difference if you divert 30 miles to avoid the three hour parking when it was cleared 30 minutes ago.

Ask any two of us and you are likely to be told it's great and it's useless. I'm afraid it's a case of flying it and seeing how you get on with it - it's a matter of personal confidence.
