Tomtom Go 720.
Against my better judgment I decided to download the latest map of Central Western Europe v720. Using ‘Home’ I paid for the map and proceeded to download. However, I live at the maximum distance from the Exchange and consequently my Broadband speed is rather slow (300kbps) and so I left my computer to download over night hoping that all would be well. Unfortunately after rising at dawn I found that my computer had downloaded about two thirds of the map and had then given up the ghost. I could not get it to proceed any farther and had no choice but to abort.

Thankfully I had backed up my device before attempting the download (via Windows Explorer) and all restored perfectly. I will attempt to download again but I am not very optimistic.
Now, this is the question. I have a brother whom lives some distance away who manages to download at 11meg and I was wondering if I could install ‘Home’ on his computer and so attempt to download using his equipment. Would it work? and will my device be recognised by Tomtom and my payment (£75) recorded? An answer would be most appreciated.

As long as you log in to TomTom Home on the other PC with your account the TomTom server should recognise you have a map update waiting for download and make it available to download.
Once a map is purchased it will remain available to you via your account for upto one year - Mike

Thanks Mike. That’s put my mind at rest. Now that I know my £75 is safe I will overcome the obstacle.

Hi Mike
Its all ok. After 6 hours I have successfully managed to download the new Map using my own Broadband. Its installed, works just fine and its also Backed-up.
People with fast download speeds don’t realize how we mere mortals have to manage with dismal Broadband connections. I’ve tried three different Service Providers all of which promised wonderful speeds but all have failed. I suppose I will just have to be patient and wait for future technology.
Anyway, thanks.

You might be better looking at using a mobile phone as a modem as 300kbs is very slow by todays standards! - although it would probably work out more costly - Mike

Trevor, are there any companies offering radio broadband in your area? I would also be unable to get a decent broadband connection, but while I was waiting for BT to enable our exchange a company tested the water in the local villages to see how many people would be prepared to have radio broadband installed. There was a £150 installation charge for the aerial, and the monthly charge isn't the cheapest, but it's worth it to have a reliable service!

Hi Mike and Anita
Yes, at the moment I am looking into both the methods that you propose. Trying to use Google Maps etc is very painful and one does tend to nod off while the map updates. And trying to talk to someone on the Help Line in their native tongue makes you want to throw your self off of the nearest building. I’m sorry if I appear to have wandered from the post but the frustration does tend to do just that.
Never mind I have no doubt it will be all right on the night
