http://www8.garmin.com/products/tourGuideSource/ is a link to tourguides, that need a Nuvi that has MP3 capability built in. I wonder if such a combination will be a must to get the best out of Garmin Nuvis.....in other words, we're missing out if we buy a Nuvi without MP3 capability??

Actually, I don't think that's entirely correct. Garmin have put .WAV support back into POILoader (as of V2.5.2). TourGuides can also be built from .WAV files, using this version. (In Garmin's best tradition, this is not documented Confused )

At least one person has reported that the Nüvi 2xx series will play such TourGuides - though I'm not sure how reliable that source is Wink ; it would be good if someone else could confirm it.

(On most units that are officially TourGuide-capable, there is a menu item that selects whether they prompt, or play automatically. That option won't be present on the Nüvi 2xx series)

That Garmin webpage is also wrong about something else pertaining to POILoader. It says "Our POI Loader supports the TourGuide feature in GPX format only". In actual fact, you can build a TourGuide using a .csv file and a matching .mp3/.wav file.

In this case, every POI in the file would play the same alert - which could make for a very boring tour! - however, TourGuide alerts have another property - they are true radius alerts, rather than being measured "Along the road". This side-effect can sometimes be a useful characteristic .
