Hello all

Decided to buy the Garmin Map Update 2008 Europe to get the latest mapping data (or that's what the advert says) for my Nuvi 660.

I live in Cornwall and was expecting this update to have the new 8 mile section of the A30 (from Bodmin to Indian Queens) which opened in July 2007 but it doesn't.

Phoned Garmin, no joy. They said that the Map Update 2008, released in March/April 2008, uses data from Navteq that's frozen in Q2 2007. Sad

I think Garmin should be a bit more upfront about their mapping data being at least 10 months out of data by the time the update DVD is released.

Garmin are being useless refusing either a freebie update to 2009, whenever that comes out, or a refund.

Anyone else come across the 'A30 problem' or got any ideas for what I should say to Garmin now?

Martin

Unfortunately that's the way of the game for the major mapping providers and users. You can generally reckon on data being 12-18 months behind. Firstly the mapping providers (TeleAtlas / Navteq) have to collate their information and build their data sets then the users (Garmin et al) have to aquire the data and test it in their systems prior to getting it ready for release.

Although you've only just purchased the update it's been available, albeit only with new units, since the later part of last year. At that time it was pretty current.

True, it would be a lot fairer is they mentioned on the web site at what date the base mapping data was sourced from Navteq. Even then Navteq can't be expected to be absolutely up to date across the board.

Tomtom and teleatlas are no better !! there map data is old even on the latest maps as well

I really think it should be more transparent to the date the map data was used

Thanks for the replies. I guess its a case of 'caveat emptor' and I shoudn't have assumed that the new/updated A30 would be on it.

As anyone who drives in Cornwall knows, the A30 is the main road linking to Devon and the rest of England, so its not like this is a minor road, the bit that's missing is a long chunk of dual carriageway!

Maybe this is something that TomTom's newer units would deal with better - MapShare I think its called. Its just a shame that Garmin don't have a similar mechanism to update smaller portions of the mapping data rather than the whole lot. Its also a shame that Garmin's customer service department have a 'it's your fault, you should have researched better before buying' attitude.

Cheers,

Martin

I do know that Garmins CN/NA 2009 update (now available) is navteq 1st qtr/08, which was a bit of a surprise as I expected 3rd qtr 07.

I have just bought a new(released March 2008) Medion gps which has Navteq mapping. It says on the map details screen Navteq 2007/Q2

So the same maps as you have just purchased Embarassed

You are right about the 8 mile section of the A30 (from Bodmin to Indian Queens) as I often holiday in Veryan and use that road on my journey.

The tele atlas mapping of the 'new' A30 has only just been updated, compare google earth to tele atlas 'insight'(map preview on the TA sight), this shows that google earth hasn't been updated yet.
