There are 3 new specs cameras on the A12 south of Colchester recently added to the database, 53199, 53188 & 53189. Does anyone have any info on them as they look like ANPR cameras when I saw them yesterday. There are 3 tempoary gantrys about 500 mt apart, rather close for specs? Each gantry has 2 small black camera with possibly an illuminator box beside it, all facing the traffic direction. The middle installation has a large dot matrix dislay at ground level which when I have been past on Sundays, is turned away from the road. There are no speed camera signs on the approach and the poles do not have the Specs logo, there are no roadworks or tempoary speed limit and they are painted white. I have not yet submitted a removal request in case they are actual specs. My feeling is they are not. Any body else seen something like this please

Martin

I have seen these as well, have been discussing them with other local Taxi drivers, what we notice is that the gantrys are not painted yellow, they have been up for a few weeks now,why 3 so close to gether ?,a phone call to the Essex camera partnership is required I think,

Every time I drive past these, the laser sensor in my Origin B2 starts beeping wildly at me between the first two poles.

Confirmed by http://www.drivingcasualtiesdown.org/cameras/locations_colchester.php that there are no fixed cameras there.

Ah Hah! As I started this felt I had to dig deeper and I have found the answer here.

http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/search/2329498.Essex__Cameras_to_monitor_A12/

They ARE speed cameras but they are on trial and not being used for enforcement. The system is called "Vehicle Activated Speed Indicator Device (VASID)" Look again at the first post of this topic for my full description of the site. Perhaps the second gantry calculates your speed and flags up your registration number on the dot matrix panel and if you do not slow down by the third gantry you are nicked?

Anybody seen it working yet? According to the newspaper there are three other sites somewhere.....

Just found this on the Highways agency Website, very informative.

http://www.highways.gov.uk/news/pressrelease.aspx?pressreleaseid=163591

Strikes me they are spending a lot of money to remind us to watch our speed, money that would be far better spent improving this sub standard trunk road.

Well that has sorted out what they are well done mhvideos for taking time to do that,
Now it is all down to "big brother watching you" cannot see them only being in use for seven weeks though ,the cost alone of putting up the gantries, but there again an excuse is not needed when it comes to the Govt wasting our money

Very interesting indeed, it's only the last week or so that the display board has been turned to face oncoming traffic. Still not seen it light up at all though.

Not new at all. I saw a sign like this some 20 odd years ago whilst out for a drive with my father. In fact i even thought about it when they started bringing the xx mph Speed Limit Matrix boards out. I remember him saying "Watch this...." and then nudging the speed limit to get his reg plate flashed up.

They've gone now, taken away since yesterday.

I went past the first two gantrys in the early hours of the morning a couple of times but never triggered them, and I normally go past there daily. Nothing, not a glimmer at all on the display but I did get a 'laser' warning from my B2 every day.
