How good in the market is the TomTom 720T and does RDS TMC Function work in 2008, read some very negative things last year that it just did not work.

I have had my original TomTom One Go V1 from when first launched and either need to update maps traffic etc, therefore a another cost of £80 for the package Cameras Traffic and new maps UK Europe or buy a new TomTom hence my question.

I have not followed prices of GPS Systems for years so was wondering whether £205 is a good price inc RDS TMC is there going to be more reductions in the coming months.

TIA for any help

First of all there is still an issue with reception of RDS-TMC in UK, this is far better than the older receivers, but the absence of any connection for an external connection severely lets it down. A simple connection to the car radio aerial is all that is needed to boost reception in poor areas of signal strength, or if your vehicle is equipped with athermic glass.

Once you have got reception the next issue is data quality, again it is better, but there is some large area for improvement here. Often delays are not present where the device reports them, it is still not mature enough to trust in use.

Finally there is the TomTom software and how it uses RDS-TMC data (or rather it doesn't use it), seldom will you see incidents displayed on the RDS-TMC bar to the right of the screen, if you do see an incident it won't have a delay duration against it.

If traffic information is important to you I would use the GPRS subscription service to be honest, this does require a Bluetooth connection to your mobile phone, but eliminates the poor reception and missing delay information. This will also save you more cash, the 720 was available last weekend for £169, or use the radio announcements and read the motorway gantries, often these are more accurate - Mike

The RDS-TMC service is quite frankly, rubbish (Mike is being VERY polite when he says "an issue" - it's what Custer said about the Indians). Don't even consider it, because the rate they're going (slowly, if not backwards), TT are never going to get it working properly! Choose the GPRS subscription through your phone, like Mike recommends.

The TT cameras subscription is also rubbish - you'll be better off with the one from here.

Thank you both for your info and in depth explanation into the RDS TMC issues.

I did have the subscription to TomTom Traffic through my mobile, this sub ran out and I was not going to renew before knowing whether I was going to update my TT or not.

Sure I see just the 720 for £149 this week.

Anyway I thank you both for your time and reply and you have fully answered my question.

So the cameras via here are better that is also food for thought

Not just food for thought - it's honestly a no-brainer - we've got over 12,000 for the UK alone! - Fixed, Mobile, Specs, Temp, Redlight. AND you can configure warnings for them just to suit yourself.

Uh? I didn't hear anything? Just thought you were saying you'd have to consider it, so I gave it a bit more of a plug. Very Happy

Totaly agree with all the previous comments. I purchased a TT720T and initialy was impressed. Having used the device for around seven months now I am totaly dissapointed with it. Firstly the traffic receiver is useless around my location due to reception. To be fair I have had it working in other parts of the country. Since updating the TT software to V8.300 the computer voices break up, I have been in touch with TT,they are aware of the problem and tell me it will be resolved on the next update (why do TT not V & V their software before they release). The device will not read some SD cards and the hands free bluetooth mobile function is very temporamental.
Overall I am very unhappy with the device and have found the after sales customer service from TomTom very dissapointing. Sad

Try here they have a few left at a price lower than you are quoting.

What you won't want to know is that they were offering factory refurb 720s lower than £100 a couple of months ago Cool

You could look at the 520 they have for sub £100 and cost up the price of European mapping and put it on an SD card. It would end up very much the same.
