A 1Hz standard GPS is fine for doing this type of work, used in conjunction with the wheel speed sensor which is much faster than 1Hz.

All you do is use the GPS speed to "calibrate" (or offset) the Speedo to the correct speed, this should be done every minute or so when the GPS fix is valid. This method uses the wheel speed sensor, GPS, Speedo and something like a PDA or car computer to perform the I/O between the sensors - it is very easy to do, it is just costly as the type of hardware cards required for this are expensive something like This In a PDA will do what you want, but they are far from cheap - Mike
