Here’s the scoop......I have an aytobe device, and have been pretty happy with the native satnav application on it. However, I now need to extend coverage outside the UK to Western Europe. I also have an HTC P4550 mobile phone (with GPS) running Microsoft Mobile 6 Professional
Here are the potential options that I think are available to me:
1) Buy the latest UK/Western Europe map set from Tele Atlas for the aytobe http://navigation.teleatlas.com/en/shop/aytobe/aytobe-pg-63509 Pros: Least hassle, and likely to work immediately + keep aytobe, which cost £99.
Cons: Additional cost of c.£70.
3) Buy a brand new satnav device, that covers UK & Western Europe http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Home-&-Leisure/cat/GPS-Satellite-Navigation Pros: Get new device
Cons: Additional cost £60 to £150, depending on brand + Time/effort in researching suitable (future safe) device + aytobe gets binned + HTC not utilised.
Are these options about right? Which would make most sense? Are there any other options worth considering?

You can only have the TomTom Naviagtor map activate on a single device so putting on the PNA and your PDA phone isn't within the license that comes with the software.
TTN 6 maps are around two years old by now so I wouldn't recommend that - have you had a look at the McGuider application which will work on your phone and cost under £40 for full European mapping - its not a bad application and for the price you get far more upto date mapping - Mike
Thanks for your comments, mikealder, and good points re. TTN 6!
I'm looking in to McGuider, and will post an update as soon as I get a chance.
The McGuider website referes to Tele Atlas for future map & software updates. Any idea if such updates are free, or at least cheaper than buying the original at retail?

Customer Services at Tele Atlas were very helpful. Upgrades for maps/software are available, but they’re not so much an upgrade as a repurchase.
This seems to be the way of things regarding SatNav software – well, at least for TTN, aytobe or McGuider. Essentially, you have to repurchase new versions to keep your maps/software up-to-date – as opposed to being able to buy lower cost updates/upgrades.
If this is the case, then I may as well buy the aytobe update for any extra tenner, rather than McGuider. Particularly as the aytobe device has a much bigger screen than the HTC phone (so better when driving) and I have all the in-car accessories for it already.
Also, according to Tele Atlas Customer Services a new version of McGuider is expected in Nov08, so anyone interested in McGuider might want to wait until it’s released.
Not sure if any of this is of interest to anyone but me, but hey, I feel better for it!
