I've just got an HTC Touch Dual Pocket PC phone, and I'm still getting the hang of it. I've got a Navicore dongle for it to listen to, and I'm wondering what's the best software to start with- I'm not really interested in map support- I can navigate well with just an arrow and distance- but speed camera support is a must- any recommendations?

By Navicore dongle I assume you mean a GPS Receiver? - if so have a look at This it won't do navigation but it is very good at speed camera warnings - Mike

And if you are after navigation software, they all come with maps but you can choose to have a 'safety display' on many that just shows next turn and other info and hides the map itself.

Consider ALK's CoPilot 7 which is a very good package or TomTom Navigator 6 for PocketPC.

Thanks for the replies -I like the look of Speed Sentry, and I've downloaded the .cab version- I *presume* that it can be installed without a PC- I discovered early on that Windows Mobile 6 won't talk to anything less than Activesync 4.5, and my Windows Me won't run anything more than Activesync 3.8. Oh, and I don't have an internet connection at home. I've saved the .cab file to an MP3 player in the cybercafe, which I'll copy to my PC, then to my old Nokia 6230 via the data cable, then to the Pocket PC phone via bluetooth. It's called the information superhighway. The Navicore dongle I mentioned- it's a little, easily hidden Bluetooth GPS receiver. I'm reluctant to invest in full navigating software- I was able to do some useful multi-drop navigating with just a first generation Garmin eMap. I did have a talking Garmin i3, but it kept telling me that people on pedestrian crossings were plotting to murder me, and then one day I had a smashed window and no Garmin i3. The police are tackling the problem by giving out wet wipes to remove the sucker marks.

A very interesting method to get data to your PPC based phone, it is certainly innovative, I would suggest you get a card reader though for larger file transfers it is simply easier to pop the card out of the phone and use the PC to access the card as an external drive (I assume Win ME can do that) - Mike

I got Speed Sentry installed, but there seems to be a problem with the COM port management between the application and the OS - for what it's worth, it's Windows Mobile 6 Professional CE OS5.2.1622(Build18128.0.4.4) It seems to be opening ports and not closing them cleanly- it keeps coming up with "Unable to open port. Port may be already open", and I can only get it going by shifting to another port, and doing a soft reset when I run out of ports. Is this a fault, a feature, or finger trouble?

Re. The card reader- I'd consider that as an option, but carefully- it is one of those itsy bitsy teenie weenie Micro SD cards, and an awfully crowded cybercafe. The old Nokia 6230i just needed a USB lead to become a datapen, and I would have hoped that the Pocket PC would have done the same- maybe a plug and play USB Bluetooth Dongle is the answer.

I did have trouble getting the application to open the GPS port to get at the GPS data from the inbuilt receiver on some HTC devices, in the end I used Fransons GPS gate to open it and share the date accross multiple applications (which I was using at the time).

Any CyberCafe PC would need Active Sync installed to see your device if they permitted you to plug it in to their PC, after that you can see the PPC phone and access the memory card - Mike
