whenever i use the 'find poi' menu option the navigation screen ALWAYS reverts back to 2D mode regardless of what it was on before.

does this happen with anyone else or just me?!

I use the 3D view all the time.
I've just used the search to enter a POI as a destination & menu, nearby POI to find a speed camera. Each time my 3D view is retained.

Can you explain in more detail the steps that you've taken and I'll try to replicate it exactly.

cp7 normal map view in 3d (not navigating anywhere)

menu / nearby poi

select a group - eg petrol station

select nearest and 'ok'

... an it stays in 3d...

hmm.... i was navigating this morning so i'll try it again in the car in a bit doing exactly the same as above but while navigating!

Yep,
I've had a play while in navigation mode and it does change to 2D view.

been playing again!

it seems that once you get to the 'details' part of selecting a poi and it shows it's position on a map (which, coincidentally, is 2d) then your view is changed to 2d whether you cancel or continue to route to the new poi.

also, i just noticed the 'view shortcut button' option so now i have a new button on the map page to quickly switch it back to 3d when it canges it to 2d!
