Sat Nav VNR 9000

I have a VNR 9000 which worked before christmas but now doesn't seem to be picking up any signal whatsoever. Is anybody having the same problem as me? Do you think that it could be the satelite or is it just mine that isn't working?

There is nothing wrong with the satellite network itself so the problem must lie elsewhere.

If this is a factory fit system, what car do you have?

Do you have any ideas what it could be then? its really annoying me now. I had a wire hanging down underneath my bumper it had a little black oblong piece of plastic on and it was trailing along the floor. It's rubbed down and I can see metal coming through it. Do you think this is a sat nav sensor or does it just work through normal aerial?

My car is a 52 plate Mondeo. Person who I bought it off said that it was an added extra when he bought the car so I am assuming it was factory fitted. Do you know where I can buy a Gps antenna for it and how much about and is it easy to fit?

As I understand it, the the antenna has a proprietary connector so as the system appears to be a Ford item, the first port of call would be your local agent's parts department to price the OEM replacement antenna.

Installation is simply a matter of fitting the antenna and routing the cable back to the head unit, this could be very easy or very difficult depending on how/where the cable is routed.

The GPS is usually built into the base of the radio antenna or done with a signal splitter behind the dash if it also has telematics, so the piece hanging down might not be the culprit.

Can you post a picture of the damaged item?

If your mondeo was from a high model series, it may be the ambient air sensor thats become detached from behind the front bumper /grill.

From memory, the 9000 series wasn't available as an after market fit.

The unit can be self tested with a few button presses

turn on the head unit and press preset buttons 3 and 6 at the same time for 2 seconds.

it'll then tune to a radio station and carry out a speaker test and then an antenna and gps test

if it fails the GPS or antenna tests, the screen will say FAIL

from there you need to determine if it's the aerial or the splitter*...... Smile

It'll exit self test on it's own, or you can turn off the unit.

If your still unsure as to the defect, a dealer can diagnose the system further.

A faulty wheel speed sensor could do it, but you'd also have an ABS fault
Reverse lights or switch fault will prevent the system working too
