I have an external antenna for the TomTom Go Classic which works fine. Can I use it if I buy a 720? TomTom on the phone told me I can, but I have my doubts. It came with a special base unit to replace the one that came in the box, with the antenna coming out of that.

So will it connect and how?

If the old aerial is hard wired into the base then it most certainly won't fit the 720, the 720 has an MCX external connection point on the back of the device.
The 720 has a very sensitive GPS chipset fitted, considerably better than your older Go device, I would try it without the external feed as you should find it will work fine without the external aerial connected - Mike

Thanks for that Mike. I have the Ford Mondeo heated windscreen. Should it even work without an aerial in that do you think?

And what is your view about whether or not to go for the traffic edition? I read a lot of posts on here from users reporting difficulty in getting the traffic information with the aerial. Does it work any better with bluetooth?

I have used my 720 in plenty of Hire cars fitted with the same type of screen your are referring to, these contain an electrical element which is visible to the eye when you look closely. These are NOT Athermic glass and do not attenuate the GPS signal - it will work fine in your car without an external feed.

As for RDS-TMC it is still a bit of a postcode lottery, reception is better with the newer RDS-TMC receiver but it is still far from perfect. If and when you receive a signal the information it provides is often out of date, I have found it of use sometimes, but to be honest I use other sources of information in addition to the receiver before I make a call on any possible re-route.
Where the RDS unit does work well, it is very good but there is still much room for improvement in my opinion - Mike
