Merry Christmas everyone,

I wasn't sure where to post this but I've just bought a TT 920T and I'm really annoyed over the FM transmitter. I thought the transmitter would just activate when instructions were being broadcasted, that way i could still listen to the radio only for it to be interrupted by the TT's FM transmissions. Has anyone created some new firmware or mod that disables the transmitter until instructions are transmitted?

thanks for reading this,

Greg

That's not how it works. It transmits continuously on a frequency selected by you. You select the same frequency on your FM radio and the TT broadcasts to that. The instructions recommend you tune both to a frequency which isn't already carrying radio transmissions, so it is not capable of what you are after - it's either broadcasting or it isn't. When it's broadcasting, you get either nothing ("silence") or a navigation instruction. I presume you want to tune both 920T and radio to a radio frequency, but that isn't possible (well, it is, but I'd assume one would be blanked out by the other).

Dennis is right. If the TT transmitted on the same frequency as a normal broadcast channel, all you would hear would be strange hooting noises as both channels mixed (at RF frequencies) before being decoded by the radio.

The only way it might be achieved is if the TT broadcast a EON flag whenever it spoke, a suitably equipped car radio could then switch from CD or cassette to monitor the radio instead.

What I would really like to see is a small box that can communicate with the TomTom via Bluetooth for control and audio (A2DP for quality), but it should also connect to the car aerial, the box would contain an FM tuner capable of listening to the radio and auto switching to RDS traffic related information. It should also use the car aerial for the RDS-TMC data that the navigation device uses.

In use normal radio could be listened to (if so desired), or mp3 via the TomTom, all audio should be routed through the car speakers (including the phones hands free), if a local traffic alert via audio is delivered this should be automatically played (in the same way most car radios can pick up this information). I think this sort of hardware as an addition would be a great addition to the product range and eradicate quite a few of the problems we currently endure.

I will carry on looking at the stars for tonight as I am obviously not in the real world - Mike
