|
|
1. I have a TT510 that I purchased only 11 months ago when it seemed to be the only PND available that used computer software compatible with Windows ME to update it.
2. Just a few weeks after purchasing it a later version of Home was released and the ongoing compatibility with ME disappeared. Despite that I have just updated TT to V 7.160 using Home 1.3, so far everything seems to be OK.
3. I would like to update the maps in the near future so that I can use map share but that’s where my new problem begins.
4. I still use dialup for my Internet access and have Windows ME as my operating system, with Home V 1.3 build 308. Windows ME cannot support Home 2.1 and the dialup would take forever to download a new map.
5. Would it be possible to download and install Home 2.1 to my sister’s computer that has Windows XP and broadband, then do my map update download on her machine?
6. Assuming that would be OK, as she lives 45 miles away could I then continue to download updates including map revisions using my own computer? Or is Home 2.1 mandatory for map updates also?
7. I know the obvious answer is to upgrade all of my computer stuff but until I get better reports about Windows Vista service packs solving most of its many problems, or my present machine goes phut this is a non-essential expensive option.

Answer to point 5 is yes
Answer to point 6 is No, all updates now require home 2.1 or above.

Thanks Ninja21 I am still using Home 1.3 and can still update GPS fixes weekly and also downloaded the upgrade to V 7.160 for TT510 with that so it seems to work at the moment. |

As you can see from the thread I have received confirmation that I could install Home 2.1 on another PC with Windows XP and Broadband but an ambigous answer about getting updates afterwards still using my dial up, Windows ME and Home 1.3. I can at the moment get updates using it so it is really correct to say all updates must now be done using Home 2.1 it seems not.

Yeah, I'll shut up about referring to incorrect version numbers
btw, do you users in Europe find that dl maps (not mapshare updates) takes a horrendous amount of time? |

You dont say how long horrendus maybe, but the maps are very very big files. Even some of the best available broadband services in the UK will take at least 30 minutes just for the GB maps and they are the smallest of all.
P.S Have a look on the TT website in the FAQ section they have a table showing minimum download times for the various file sizes and broadband speeds. Remember they are the minimum in reality it will take longer. |
