Actually, it's spelt t', not 't! The apostrophe is there to represent the missing letters (he) of the word "the" which, as you can see, appear after the initial "t".
Know your Yorkshire? Can you translate TINTINTIN? Apostrophes have been omitted on purpose. _________________ Tim |

Are you sure you haven't left a 'T' out, Tim?
I thought it was 'T I'NT IN T' TIN.

And now another MP (and road safety campaigner) is fined, this time for using his mobile while driving...

He says it was a very important call regarding a deportation matter. Well, all the more reason he should pull over and take the call rather than trying to hold a conversation and drive at the same time then. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Know your Yorkshire? Can you translate TINTINTIN? Apostrophes have been omitted on purpose. | No it's not! It's spelt 't, for the manner in which it is pronounced (as with "gone to't factory" NOT "gone to t'factory") i.e it is normally attached to the word preceding the article, not the word following it. And doncher think your phrase is missing a T? Should be TINTINTTIN? (or at least, that's how it's pronounced). Consider, it's not usual to start a sentence with 't - e.g. you would refer to the chief constable subject of this thread as "yon" if you wanted to say "The chief constable" at the start of the sentence, but would use 't chief constable mid sentence. We Yorkshire folk are very particular about correct grammatical usage - although 't chief constable of SOUTH Yorkshire wouldn't know how. Yon southerner deserves to be maximum fined and banned for a significant period of time, if not sacked. Chief Constables must NOT be allowed to administer the law yet be exempt from it - the very opposite, transgressions should cause them to be removed from office. _________________ Dennis

It was in the Yorkshire Dalesman a long time ago. I know better than to argue with a lady. _________________ Tim |

Dennis, it's not worth getting into an argument over, but you're still wrong. Oh, and as the son of a Yorkshirewoman I wouldn't even bring myself to even write S***h Yorkshire, let alone suggest that such a place could possibly exist!

This all started out as bit of a typo, but for the record it is THE. No matter how you try to gloss it, it is still THE. In THE there is a H, an E, and a T. and when put in the right order spells THE. Like in THE CAT SAT ON THE HAT, and THE CAT'S HAT SQUASHED THE CAT.
Get it right, Sheesh! _________________ Dom

"T" is an abbreviation and the apostrophe replaces the missing letter(s), therefore the correct way of writing it is t' (T apostrophe).
Quote: | Contractions
In formal prose we would write She has told him, but when speaking we would say She's told him. The apostrophe is used to indicate the missing letters.
1. I am (I'm) - He is (he's) - You are (You're).
2. Note the difference between it's (it is) and its (belonging to it).
3. Notice too that the term its' does not exist.
4. It's may also be a contraction of 'it has' - 'It's been a pleasure meeting you'. |
It's easy to find stuff on t'internet if you know where to look.
A trip north will teach you all to talk proper like what I do.
BATH - where's the R to make it barth
GRANT - where's the second R to make it grarnt
GRASS - where's the second R to make it grarss
I could go on, but there are only so many hours in t'day
Enough said - time now to remember where the topic was _________________ Andy
