Source: BBC News Website

Quote:
A senior police officer in charge of road policy for Britain's chief constables, is facing prosecution for speeding.
Meredydd Hughes, chief constable of the South Yorkshire force, was allegedly clocked by cameras driving along the A5 near Chirk in north Wales.

He has been summoned to appear before Wrexham magistrates on 21 November.

There is a certain satisfaction in this news piece, especially as I know that camera, it is highly visible and the Officer in question has suggested disguised or otherwise less visible cameras are the way to go!

90 in a 60 limit Evil or Very Mad

He was only slightly over the limit and I think we should forgive him for not seeing that camera - NOT

His speed wasn't actually mentioned in the article Darren pointed us to, but it has been broadcast in news bulletins

He'll probably say it was a stunt to highlight the fact that highly visable speed cameras are not a deterent, and carear speeders would continue to drive too fast... ...past visable speed cameras, and get caught.

YER, RIGHT! Rolling Eyes

...what's the speed limit? ...60... ...I didn't realise... ...I thought it was 90!!! Shocked

Acually what upsets me more is that this guy has probably got a class one police drivers licence, and has taken a police advance driving test. If it was 70 in a 60 I give him the benifit, 80 I'd still forgive but not forget. But 90, well...

Should have been 100 then he might have got some respect for loosing his licence properly!

Not a given by any means.

He may win a case if he chooses to contest it with a clever legal defence (I understand Mr Loophole has volunteered his services!) but I'll bet he's prosecuted (or whomever the driver is).

Perhaps, but this has been such a high profile example that there will be an outcry if this happens.

I hope that they use this case to set an example and throw the book at this guy (with great force!!)

What possible explanation can he have for travelling at 90 in a 60 limit - 90 is well above the legal limit for ANY public road in the UK and he can't use the excuse that he was attending an emergency because north Wales is more than a short distance outside his South Yorkshire patch

Funny handshakes and organisations shrouded in secrecy still count for a lot Twisted Evil

I hope it isn't a "paperback" magistrate.

What, like they did with the last high-profile example (with regards to media coverage, not the officer's rank), where the moron was doing a much higher speed?

That case concerned an officer on duty and as such is wholly different.

Harriet Harman has been banned and if a cabinet minister receives a ban and a fine, why should a poice officer be treated differently? here

BUT, perhaps she's not a good example to use, further research shows possible 'preferred treatmant' - here and here

An habitual speeder perhaps?
