Just got one of these the other day and updated it with the latest software via the Home app. Since then it's started to make an audible whining noise. I'm wondering wether anyone else has had this problem and wether if i take it back to PC world they would accept it as a return - I'd rather do it now than waiting and for something to break on it in 6 months. It's also rebooted itself when there was no route planned.
Cheers in advance |

Nope, mine too. It's done it since I bought it and remains to do so since updating to the latest software. I find the whine inaudible when the engine is running. |

Sounds strange but try varying the screens brightness and see if that has any effect.

I'm in 2 minds as to return it to point of sale for replacement or not. I just wanted to know if this was a common thing or not. I dont want it to go bang in a couple of months.
BTW changing brightness had no effect |

Just found something out though. If you change the power saving functions so that the screen goes off either all the time or between instructions the whine disappears - even when the screen comes back to life.
The whine reappears when the unit is rebooted though
Any ideas anyone or should i return the unit and hope for one that doesn't whine. |

Just had to say.... it makes a change having the 3rd Edition itself doing the whining, rather than its' owners!
I'll get my coat.... |

A fire proof suit might come in handy. _________________ Graham.

Badum tish
Had a response from TomTom to .....reset it or take it back under 28 day policy as "buyer Remorse" Great product just let down by poor hardware and very poor support i'd say. Gonna take it back - Whats the TT one XL like anybody?? |

This is going back then. So it's a toss up between a TT ONE XL or a TT ONE v2.
Which do you reckon?? |

Accidently found the source of the whine yesterday. It's the brightness level.
At 100% = no whining noise, at anything less than 90% there is an audible whine from the machine. However in my car it's not audible when the engine is running so I'm going to just ignore it. |

Try a different backlight setting and see what you think 10% reduction doesn't make too much difference to be honest.
As for the One V2 or XL I would go with the XL the extra screen size is well worth the extra outlay, also the device still slips into a shirt pocket as it is quite slim, with either of your alternate devices you will get the full menu structure without messing around with menus (as is required to resurect POI and Itinerary on the Third Edition) - Mike |

I was undecided myself between ONE v2 or XL and I chose the XL. I used it today for the first time and needed to drive across Nottingham twice which I don’t know very well. The XL performed perfectly and is an absolutely brilliant device- I’m already hooked! Out of town the wide screen is irrelevant but in the built-up areas I’m pleased I can see more of the surrounding roads. |

excuse me if this sounds dumb, but is "backlight" a personal terminology or something available on something other than than the one 3rd edition ? because i cant find the word in the manual or anything named that on the menus
i was at 35% brightness before and so while 100% does indeed cure the whine [95% doesnt!] its proving to be a lot more distracting than before
btw - ps to 600 - thx for a solution _________________ regards
