Turn-by-Turn Directions from Free Software?

I have an HTC Mogul PPC/phone and am considering getting a Holux M-1200, but am wondering if I have to buy $150 map software like TomTom to get turn-by-turn directions.

I understand Google does turn-by turn, but it sounds like it is not prompting you based on your location. What are my options?

Spend the 150 quid, or in some countries you can get turn by turn from your cell phone, on a subscription pricing model. The Celphone option has been banded about for a few years now, but appears to have little real traction commercially. I don't know if it's the technology, marketing, or just me being out of touch (prefering not to be locked into monthly charges for long contracts, I go for the PND model over the cellular model).

Anotehr idea that has not (an never will) happen is an open source map data and software. It's just not as easy as it appears at first glance.
