In the UK the police would take it as a personal insult, pull out all the stops to identify the vehicle and very shortly find half the local police knocking at your door. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Ahh, but what would happen if that was carried out in the UK?
I'm sure the police would go ballistic and go OTT to get the driver for every charge going.
I suppose though, that the culprit would make a fortune from the media attention which would more than pay the fines. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I'm saddened by your belief that UK Police don't have a sense of humour. _________________ Tommo...

Thats a daft statement, as you get any job, with that may people and all over the UK, you are going to get some with a good sense of humour and loads without.
I live in Liverpool and not many coppers here still have a sense of humour after working here too long _________________ TomTom Go 700,

My statement was tongue in cheek, hence the wink...... I know all too well how seriously Police take relatively minor matters. Some of us can laugh at ourselves, others certainly cannot.
That goes for all professions though, not just mine. We are just the ones everyone loves to hate. _________________ Tommo...

I don't know if it's a good scientific test of a sense of humour, but I have found that police are the only people who don't laugh when I light my farts. _________________ Gone fishing!

I can see the wink, but presume it's - no comment!

Now you have started me off on a "rant"!
I don't agree that everyone loves to hate the police.
Hate is a word used by criminals, not from the rest of us.
Speaking for myself, I have two friends who are "coppers".
I was bought up to respect the police, in the day's when they were fair, it is just that today attitudes and priorities have changed.
Recently Hugh Grant's on/off girlfriend Jemima Khan attracted controversy after summoning police to look for her missing cat and the police turned out in large numbers instantly.
Despite criticisms of Khan for wasting police time, a police spokesman says, "It was not treated as a 999 (emergency) call, but because of the high value of the missing property (£1,000), we feel that the response was perfectly normal and proportionate to the value."
This makes the police look totally stupid and stinks of "Class".
We all know someone who has been burgled for far greater values, sometimes the police are called whilst the burglar is still in the house and they refuse to turn up.
School children have been prosecuted for chalking the pavement when playing games such as "hopscotch".
Motorist's being persued for their wallets/purses for speed camera "cash cows".
It's not the fault of PC Plod or you personally 999tommo, in other areas the police do a great job, but is ruined by others in high rank or government who have lost the plot, rather than hate, it is more about - lost respect, that's what makes the news above so funny from a public viewpoint, when we should really treat it as criminal.
We all know that the police would retaliate heavily for a relatively minor crime, a sense of humour from the police - most certainly not. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Oh dear GJF, we have had a bad day.
Just to explain my comments...... my wink was because I was making a comment which I didn't really believe. I know the 'POLICE' do not have a sense of humour. Police Officers on the other hand, have a terrific sense of humour, as it is the only way to get through a day sometimes. If we didn't laugh and make jokes, we would become mental hospital inmates.
When I said our profession was the one that everyone loves to hate, I accept that 'HATE' may be a bit strong and 'EVERYONE' was too inclusive. I too was brought up to respect authority, but it seems that this trait is becoming less and less common. Police officers do what they have to do, because it is their job to do it. Police officers get assaulted, sworn at .....etc etc, when they are trying to do their job. Traffic officers (of which I am one) get a hard time from supposed law abiding motorists, when the motorist should be angry at themselves.
