Hi all,
With due respect to all the info-rich people i would like to get some dose of information regarding a GPS application which i am developing. The application is developed on the Montavista distribution of Linux and is developed for a Hand-held device called 'Mobilis' (manufactured by an Indian Co.). Can any body tell me how can a I create maps of cities(with their roadnetworks) with their real GPS locations on this kind of a hand held device?????

Also it would be a gr8 help if somebody could suggest a tool by which i can play around with this like zooming in and zooming out etc. But pls rememeber its a hand-held device and has a limited computational power so pls suggest some light-weight soln.

It would be gr8 if i can get some useful info from you guys and would be happy to discuss the application that i am developing.

Welcome meteor

Have a look here at GPSMapEdit, you can get the source code (or at least part of it) so it might be a good place to start!

Also have a look at GPSMap-OS which comes with source code (for PPC)

GPSMap-OS uses a raster map and calibrates it then displays your position. It works well for scanned maps but it won't scale up to large areas.

GPSMapEdit uses vector maps (ie lines with start and end points, polygons, layers etc) which is very similar to the way Garmin do their mapping and if you are serious about street mapping then this is what you have to do.

Your biggest problem with be getting a license for the map data, probably from someone like Navteq or TeleAtlas. Some countries have free data available, but mostly you have to pay (probably quite a lot) for it.

Good luck! Thumbs Up
