I am really upset. My new LG Shine won't link properly with my TomTom 910 as a headset (latest software version) the TomTom says it has a problem locating BT services on the handset and the Shine keeps dropping the link.

Coincidentally I've tried two different A2DP headsets with the phone - a Plantronics and a Jabra and the Jabra works OK but the Plantronics keeps getting dropped.

Does anyone have a similar problem - are LG planning a patch?

I have gone back to my Nokia 6680 - works a treat so the TomTom is definitely not at fault here (that said I suppose the 6680 doesn't have A2DP and just connects as a mono headset....) is there a known issue with mobile handsets trying to use the Bluetooth A2DP profile for transport controls and getting confused if both devices have music playback facilities?

TomTom's compatibility list only shows one LG phone - the KG800 - as (partially) compatible, I'm afraid.

Good point - I'm screwed then. You kind of expect as technology moves on that more capabilities get added - no way I thought the latest all singing all dancing handset would drop the ball on something this simple. Also I thought the whole idea of standards like A2DP was to ensure consistency across all manufacturers...

I can't help thinking that neither TomTom or LG are entirely to blame here. Where two devices have similar features like headset with playback controls the protocol should simply allow you to choose which has priority - in this case I want the TomTom to be a headset for calls and music and a master for wireless data...

Is that what I was trying to get across to Dennis in THIS POST, but couldn't find the right words?

It's certainly similar - both devices have disks with data on them and can't sort out who is running the show...

Yeah, well, these people sell bluetooth thingies, saying that with bluetooth you can connect to other bluetooth thingies. So people buy people's bluetooth thingies and then find out they can't send stuff to other bluetooth thingies. That's deceptive and stuff. Old people can't understand this sort of thing.
