Hello all, I've searched through the forums looking for details of PNDs that I could permanently mount in my car, which will turn on/off with the ignition.
In one posting, someone mentioned that the older Garmin Streetpilot C320 would do this, and it seems that some of the tomtom's will do it as well (if mounted in the car mount).
I'm quite tempted to get a Nuvi 310D, but wondered if someone could confirm that the ignition will turn the unit on and off when it's given power through the car charger without me having to press any buttons?
(And if anyone has any other recommendations, they'd be most welcome)
Many thanks,
Andy |

Yes; my Nuvi 300 comes on when the car is started and switches off 30 seconds after the power is turned off ( the 30 seconds is to allow you to opt to keep it running on its internal battery). |

I wonder how long it will be before your car is broken in to to steal the "permanently mounted" Garmin? |

This isn't a failing of the Nuvi though, which will auto shutdown when external power is lost. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Thanks for the comments. I opted for a Nuvi 610T from Handtec.

I checked the cigarette lighter before making a purchase - it is ignition switched so thats not a problem.

The car's a current model Avensis, which has a lidded storage box moulded into the center of the top of the dashboard. The unit is permanently mounted in that, with the power supply running into the box behind the dashboard. With the storage box closed, there are no signs that a GPS is in the car. No mounts, no wires. So, I too wonder how long it will be before the car is broken in to, to steal the "permanently mounted" Garmin.

personally, i still wuldn't tempt fate. all it needs is for some scumbag to see you pulling up with satnav and nipping into the shop for them to smash and grab. just the same as keeping it in the glovebox
