Latitude/Lonitude Format

I'm trying to update my French Aires POIs on my Garmin Nuvi. The Aires book I'm using quotes the GPS locations in the normal degrees/mins/secs and another format I dont understand. It seems to be degrees/mins/*** where *** is a three digit number. The normal North/west etc is included in both formats. Any ideas anyone?

Might it be that the odd 3 digits are decimal minutes?

Why not add a couple of locations that you are finding difficult to work out, preferred if the last figures that you are interested in are above 60, a value expressed as N54 30.887 is most certainly D.M.M whereas N54 30 53.2 is the same in DMS format - Mike

I think I get your point Mike but here's an exact example.
47 54' 200 Nord//004 16' 763 Ouest. (I have not included the degree symbol as I don't think it's available in this text editor). I also need to check if the ref is Lat/ long or Long/Lat.

I think it is Degrees, minutes, seconds and tenths of seconds.
I can enter those co-ordinates into TomTom directly in that format.
Your example puts me 200yds west of the N71 just south of Gommeville, if I enter it as N47deg 54' 200 E004deg 16' 763.
(Whereas entering N47deg 54.200' E004deg 16.763' is off-road south of Panfol and north of Bel-Air)

Also have a look at the options on THIS PAGE. They seem to agree that this is an established method.

As for your last question, the Latitude is obviously the "North" figure (around 50 for France) and the longitude is East/West (around +4 or E4 for France).

The posted sample is North then West. Given that the last part of the longitude is 763 I'd think that it must be decimal minutes rather than seconds. To convert the fraction part to seconds, multiply it by 60.
The site below has a lot of reference info on aires, including large POI downloads in .ov2 (for TomTom) and .asc (comma separated values) formats that might save you a lot of typing!
