New to this and have some questions

As I stated, I am new to the GPS world. I have been reading and I am considering purchasing a etrex legend. I would like to use it for fishing and hunting. How do I go about making sure that I can get my local maps for this model and where do I get them? I would idealing like to mark waypoints on the GPS the night before I go to garage sales as well. Will any type of software do this?

If you are buying the eTrex unit - then you will need to get maps from GARMIN - other suppliers maps won't work. Usually they will be supplied with a basic map and sometimes (as a special offer) with more detailed map of a specific region. Make sure you buy a unit for the region that you want to use it in most often. I.e US units can be bought from eBay much cheaper than UK versions - but the base maps supplied aren't much use in the UK.

You can buy (from Garmin) Mapsource maps for most parts of the word. These will come on CD/DVD and you can load waypoints, plan routes etc on the Mapsource software on your PC then transfer these and sections of the maps to your eTrex for use. Similary you can download any tracks recorded when out and display these on your PC and keep as a record.
