i3 gone blank

For some reason my Garmin i3 Streetpilot has started comeing up with this message...

"Please use the provided PC software to load maps containing turn-by-turn route information"

What does this mean?

I've managed to download a version of Mapsource v9 but cant upload it to the unit. But even so....I have downloaded the software that is stored on the unit to Mapsource and the version 8 that is on there arrives on Mapsource. But when I go to the Map option on the i3...it is blank.

Any ideas any?

Did anything happen to the unit before this happened? Did you try and load anything onto it? Or did you take the card out / put card in something else?

Also is it the type with a memory card?

If it has a card with the data on, take it out and gentle clean the terminals with an eraser.

Failing that take the card out and turn the unit on and off. Reinstall the card and see.

Could be worth a hard reset, back up favs on Easy GPS first
