First time poster, short time member, SATNAV (total) newbie.
Many thanks everyone for a very helpful site :D
I now have a Garmin Nuvi 310d (After rejecting my Roadangel 6000 - which gave me many problems :x)
I took a short journey (25 miles) yesterday to try out my new kit, and it functioned superbly BUT the battery died after this short period of time (less than 1 hour). The unit was positioned on the front windscreen and in full sun, so I had the units brightness control on maximum. I did try the "timeout" setting for the backlight, expecting the unit to self illuminate when new directions were given but the unit stayed dim (is that normal ??)
Can anyone give me some battery saving tips for this unit from their personal experiences ?. Would it be best to permanently connect the unit to the cars ciggy lighter ?
Many thank for reading, and many thanks again for the superb site.
Very best regards
Brian
PS The camera POI database is superb !!

My wife has a 310 which is not connected to a charger in the car usually. She gets 3ish hours before she feels she should recharge it (down to last bar on battery life display). She has the illumination down lowish (30% AFAIR). This weekend I will probably route the supplied charger through the dash and into the back of the mount - I did the same with my 660. Its a neat solution and it allows the unit to be kept topped up.
Don't know if the 310 is the same as the 660 - but the 660 seems to have different display settings for internal power and external power. E.g. it remembers the brightness levels for both conditions. Personally I have my 660 display on very low (10%) 'cause at night I found the sudden brightening of the screen very distracting. I don't have much problem seeing the display in these recent bright conditions. It's mounted at the lower RHS of the windscreen in a VW BORA, it's shielded by the side pillar.
I would recommend some form of connection to the car power. _________________ Phil |

Brian Welcome to the forum, I would expect between 2 and 4 hours from the battery but only when fully charged, not all devices are supplied as fully charged which could explain why it "died" after only one hour.
Secondly the type of battery fitted will take around five or six charge/ discharge cycles to achieve is optimum capacity. They do not suffer from the NiCAD memory problem that plagued earlier rechargeable cells, so its not a problem keep charging it up.
I would do as Phil says, make sure its plugged in when using the device, if you want a neat installation bury the cable but beware of any airbag devices when messing behind any modern car dashboard these days - Mike |

Many thanks for the replies :D
Some good tips there, thanks.
I actually took the Guvi on a run last night, 1 1/2 hours and it lost 25% of it's power, so I was very happy with that performance. I had obviously not charged the Guvi fully . The power adaptor, for the record, is now firmly entrenched in the glove compartment for those extra long journeys.
For the record 2. I tried my hardest last night to confuse the Guvi, by constantly ignoring it's directions and taking deliberate wrong turns. The Garmin did not get lost once. It's "recalculation" of routes was very rapid. I also drove past every speed camera I could remember and the database (downloaded from this great site) spotted them all, giving me ample warning on each occasion.
In my short time spent wth the Guvi, I can honestly say that I am delighted with this piece of kit. |

Hi Brian
Just posted you a reply on PM 8)
Trying to pair with a couple of different phones sounds a really good move - try different manufacturers to be sure it's the not the nuvi playing up - doubt it anyway . .
Keep me posted |

I bought both a 310 and a Motorola L6 mobile this week and managed to pair them together first time. I have already made several calls via the 310 without any problems. |
