Have a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_east/6595649.stm

It would be quite difficult for these to be reported to PGPSW. How would you know where they were?

The cats eye cameras can't be used for speed enforcement at the moment. This is just a headline grabbing statement by the Constable.

Even worse is this one:

BBC wrote:
Mr Brunstrom showed his audience an "horrific" photograph of a decapitated motorcyclist, and another of the man's headless torso.

The meeting was also shown a picture of two young men, aged 25 and 16, lying dead by the side of a mangled car.

He said both accidents had been caused by the excessive speed of the dead men.

He confirmed that the families of the dead men were not aware the images were being used in the presentation.

I think that's an extremely distasteful thing to do. I wonder what the families are going to think when they find out. Sad

They have been installed and detected previously, somewhere around Hamilton in Scotland IIRC, they do give off an infa-red signature so they can be detected. I am sure we would be made aware of there installation very quickly though, its not a 5 minute job putting these in.

The other claims in the report are intended to shock people into thinking the authority's are doing the right thing, I somehow doubt that a speed camera would stop some poor unfortunate soul being decapitated due to a road accident, I often wonder what planet some of the advisors are actually on to come up with a media launch such as this, yes speed kills but cameras do not prevent accidents, to claim they have reduced road deaths by 53 in a six years is a ridiculous use of statistics. - Mike

How recently? The only remotely reliable mention of them, that I can find, is on ukspeedtraps.co.uk, but I know that page has been in place for a while (2005?). It states that they are being trialled. Most other mentions seem to be at least as old. Most importantly, there is no mention of them on camerascutcrashes, and no fixed cameras shown on the M74. I believe that these would need "type approval", and I think we'd have heard about it if they had.

They have not yet obtained approval so any installation can only be used for test purposes and not for enforcement. As soon as they are approved and we discover their locations we will of course record them in the database.

I would have thought that the cost of installation would prevent widespread use of such technology.

When you consider that nowadays most roads, at best, only receive a coat of tar topped with loose chippings or the odd lumpy patch of tarmac here and there. Also, the majority of modern catseyes are self-adhesive reflectors rather than the old style sunken self-cleaning reflectors.

It would be surprising if councils and/or highways agencies suddenly find funding to tear roads up, lay goodness knows how much cable and re-surface roads properly with layers of tarmac like the good old days simply to add a few cameras hidden in catseyes.

IMHO, their usage will be few and far between - but I may well be proven wrong.

So much for promoting safety on the roads.

Particularly in wet weather, the white lines don't 'reflect' as much as they used to in the good old days and often it's only the catseyes that show where the road goes.

Also, if this whole issue is supposed to be about road safety, then why aren't there more prosecutions for people who knock down bollards, hang "Happy Birthday" things etc from road signs? They are, after all, interefering with safety equipment.
