Geography Teacher & GPS

I'm a Geography teacher, and I like to think I'm progressive and always trying new things.

As I shall shortly be acquiring both a etrex Vista GPS I'd like ideas from seasoned GPS users as to how this might be used in a classroom.

I'm afriad in the current educational climate that actually doing something as audacious as taking a class outside, let alone out of school is probably out of the question....but how can i use my GPS in some way to inspire or motivate?

These are the next generation of explorers...they'll be the Galileo (http://europa.eu.int/comm/dgs/energy_transport/galileo/index_en.htm) users of the next decade. It'd be nice for them to look back on the quaint accuracy of GPS in the early noughties...

Using GPS in-doors is a problem. If you just wanted to show some stats like a position and some figures from various eTrex screens, then you could use a Re-Radiating antenna. However, that's really about all you can do in-doors.

Probably the best way to demonstrate GPS would be to record various routes and tracks, set waypoints when you go out walking/hiking and perhaps and then download these onto a map back in the classroom. You would have to calibrate a map, but this could then show where you have been and how GPS could be used.
