what is the best satnav for avoiding narrow lanes

I have had an i3 for qbout 18 months anfd have been very impressed witht the unit. However since starting to tow a caravan ihave have been routed down narrow lanes.
What is the best sat nav to but that is customisable to avoid arguements with tractors in the countryside!!

All the Garmin units have the "country roads" problem unfortunately. Their maps identify country lanes as 60 MPH roads so it sometimes takes these in preference to A roads. Garmin must be well aware of the problem but they haven't managed to come up with a fix in the last few years. :x

Can anyone comment on other sat nav systems?

TomTom used to have the right idea. It allowed you to set your preferred speed for M-Ways, A roads, B roads and rest. This allowed you to tweak the routing. Since they did away with it they must be assuming some speed for them - but I don't know what. I seem to recall several suspicious routing choices with TomTom over the last few years :D

A 'simple' solution would be for Garmin to assume the speed limit on unclassified roads is 30mph leaving the default speeds for classified roads as is. Don't know what issues this would have on other non-UK roads though.

Apparently Garmin recommend their more expensive units when towing (2720 or 7xxx) as these have better controls over the routing choices.

Personally, the best option is to plan out your route in advance, and just stick to the more major roads, and of course remember when heading towards many sites to use the directions the site provide, to avoid narrow lanes / sharp bends / low bridges etc.

Thanks for the swift replies. Some posts on the forum suggest that changing vehicle type to truck will help. But when i asked Garmin they said this only changes ETA. Can anyone comment on this ?

Yep - the truck setting only lowers the speeds for the roads - so the trip time is longer.

I would stick to the tips swing gives and throw in a lot of common sense. Laughing

skippy i did ask this question to garmin at the OS outdoor show its not a problem with the garmi routing engine, its the map dat problem and the is down to most unclassified roads in the uk have a 60 mph speed limit. they did say they are working on the problem but as yet there is know fix
