New Rules on Speed Cameras Start April the 1st (no joke!)

New rules that could stop the rapid rise in the number of speed cameras have come into force.

From Sunday, cameras in England and Wales will no longer be funded from the fines raised from those caught by the devices - the money goes to Government, who then provide grants to local authorities for road safety improvement (not just cameras).

What does this mean?

The main difference will be with Mobile Cameras, where their positions will be less predictable - focusing on local concerns (schools, etc.) rather than roads where the statisticians state they are needed.

The good news that mobile cameras should be operating with temporary warning signs, but don't rely on that.

The Dept of Transport website has some guidelines, but the Local Safety Partnership sites appear to mainly refer to the much-hated 'netting off' where they got a significant proportion of the money straight back, encouraging the Catch and Fine approach to generate cash.
