As I was coming home tonight workmen were just finishing the installation of specs cameras on the 50mph section of the M60 at Bredbury, heading towards Stockport. There have been flashing warnings sign there for a while now, but today they've put up specs. They are installed on the overhead gantry at the start of the 50mph limit, at the start of the Bredbury exit slip road, and on a gantry just before the Stockport exit at the end of the 50 limit section. I couldn't see any average speed warning signs, but the cameras won't be active yet.
Does anyone know if there are roadworks planned for this section, or is this going to be a permanent installation? |

This is permanent, seen a cop in the tv the other night explaining that it's due to the high rate of accidents on the 'bend' plus that there records show that despite this section being a reduced 50mph prt of the M60 few drivers are adhering to this limit. Of course he denied that revenue had any bearing on the decision. _________________ Fraserp

I think this is going to catch a lot of people. There are lots of cars going into the first cameras at 70+, and even if they do then realise it's a specs zone, it's very short, so you don't have much time to pull your average speed down.
It's also dangerous because people are now slamming on their brakes to get down to 50 at the last minute. I wonder how many accidents it's going to cause approaching it while reducing them on the bend. |

A poor road layout is the best way to describe that junction, I agree fully the SPECS installation will probably cause more accidents then they will prevent, if they are needed then at least half a mile earlier than the current position would be safer IMHO. Lets wait till winter with poor visibility coupled with longer dark nights and the area will become an accident black spot more so than it currently is.
As an alternative we could all write to the authorities (and local media) to voice the concerns about the depreciation in overall safety the current installation has for that section of road.
This is yet another example of ill thoughtout use of the technology - Mike |

How do these warning signs differ from ordinary speed camera signs? _________________ Andy

You'll know them when you see them. ;) _________________ Richard
