|
|
This is my first post and sorry if this question was asked before. I just installed TomTom Navigator 6 on my Sony Ericsson p990i smart phone. I'm using it in combination with a Delorme Earthmate GPS + Blue tooth power pack. After doing few runs last night, I noticed my home location according to the GPS coordinates is about 100 yards out *almost close to the next street. However, the map is showing the correct address when I point at it with the stylus.
My question is, who is wrong?
Do I have to recaliberate the Tomtom software or the GPS unit?
Thanks for your help,
Dinesh H |

Welcome to the forum, try using Change Prefernces / Change Home Location/ GPS Position when you are stood outside your front door, this will force the unit to know where your home is accurately located rather than where it "thinks" you live.
Probably down to a slight mapping error to be honest I don't use the nav home to accuratly find where I live, local knowledge helps in my experiance.
You cannot calibrate the map so either try the suggestion above or live with it - Mike |

Thanks for the prompt reply. I entered the home location using the address found in the navigation software. The bottom line is: it Navigated me to the wrong address *and that can't be acceptable with current rates of accuracy found with maps/GPS units*. As for turn by turn directions, it was accurate. I will compare with my Garmin Emap to see what GPS coordinates it has for my house address and compare the two.
The part I don't understand is, the software accurately display the House number if I drag the Stylus back over to where my house should be on the map. Which means it knows the current GPS coordinates are not the same as the address that is on the database to show the address correctly on the map.
Hm mm confused.
Thanks,

mike - again thanks for the reply. I think you misunderstood my question. Like you suggested, I did manage to record my home location using the GPS coordinates last night to correct the issue. More to the point or the question: I was looking at a way to solve this inaccuracy with the two products I'm using. Since the accuracy is almost 1/4 of a block out, I will never be able to accurately navigate to a street address at night using Tom Tom navigator 6 without concern. In the past I have used these products and they all have been spot on with various addresses including mine:
Garmin eMaps
Sony Ericsson p900 + MGMaps (using google maps) + Delorme Earthmate GPS
Thanks, Dinesh H

Mapping inacuracy is usually the case. But there is also a small possibility of GPS error.
If you can, try another bluetooth GPS and see if it is the same.
Or try another location/address miles away. If the inacuracy is consistant then it must be the GPS error. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Mapping error, or did you use Postcode to enter the original Home location, as postcodes can be quite a bit out. Is this being used in the UK or elsewhere? - generally the device will take you to the correct road and 99% of the time put you outside the house number you selected - I guess you will need to use it further to gain confidence in the software’s ability to get you to where you are going.
If you are using it to go back to regular addresses you should also consider creation of a POI file which will take you back to specific locations very accurately - Mike |
