Hi, I have just connected my TT Go 300 to my PC and used TomTom Home for the first time, it showed an update available for a later version.
My TT has version 5.410 and it said I could update to version 6.520, however, once I downloaded it I could not install it as a message appeared that said I have insufficient memory, 3mb short.
Does the version update go on the SD card? I am using the original SD card supplied with the unit from new. If I get a new larger card could I add my back up files to it and then update the version from 5.410 to 6.520?

Your assumptions are correct. The updated software goes onto the card. If you would like a bigger card, there is no problem buying one. You can copy all of the information from your current card into a folder on your PC, then copy all of that data onto your new card. Once complete, you can install the updated software.
Please remember BEFORE carrying out any changes to your device, do a complete backup of your device, preferably using windows explorer rather than HOME. This will ensure that if there is a problem, at least you can go back to how it was.
To do this, you will need to check the folder options in windows explorer, under the tools tab, select folder options, then view. Scroll to the 'show all hidden files' and make sure the check box is marked witha dot. Once this is done, create a folder for your device in a place where you will locate it easily, plug in your device and using windows explorer to find your device (Probably an E or F drive) select all, and copy this to the foler you created. Swap over your SD cards from old to new, open your folder where you transferred the data, select all the contents and copy it back to the new card on your device. I have a trip to France coming up soon and was going to buy the French map, if I buy a big enough card can I have both GB and France on the same card? (by using the process outlined above to transfer the files) or should I just leave each set of maps on their own cards and use accordingly?

Yes, if the card is big enough, you can have both maps installed on the one card and in the preferences menu, under 'manage maps' you can switch between the maps. A 1GB will be plenty big enough for both UK and France-Plus maps, and leave lots of room for POI's etc. I previously had exactly that on my TT One (V1) but now have a 710 with full Western-Europe mapping.
If you are downloading the map from Tom Tom, you will only be able to install it through theHOME software. It's not a problem to do, although the download takes a while, depending on your connection speed. If you are on dial-up, forget it and buy on a card. I think my France-Plus download cost about 45 euros. It contains street level mapping of France, together with the major roads of western Europe. This means with the French map selected, you can navigate to France from the UK, provided you stick to major s in the UK, i.e motorways, dual carriageways or A roads. _________________ Tommo...
Can I add something to this topic. I have just bought a Tomtom One XL Europe, which comes with everything installed internally and no SD card supplied. There appears to be a total of 1 gb of memory, which is almost full. If I want to add voices or speed cameras, there is not enough space unless I delete something. If I insert an SD card, my PC then only recognizes the card, not the Tomtom. Can you tell me how I can use the SD card slot to extend the memory? Thanks

It doesn't extend the memory. On the ONE models, it uses either the internal flash memory OR the SD card.
All you have to do is copy EVERYTHING (including the operating system files) from the internal memory to a new SD card of sufficient size. Once that is inserted, the unit will boot from the SD card instead.
