Hello fellow GPS'ers Smile

I just recently bought a TomTom ONE. I love it and i havn't even had it 2 days yet. I am very need to the GPS world and was wondering if someone could help me with some things. I don't know where to start, but is there new maps i need to download? POI's i need to install? New firmware to install? Any tips or hints for me? Anything at all i need to know, being a first time GPS owner? Thanks a lot!

The first thing you must do is make a backup of your SD card before you even consider adding POIs or upgrading anything. It is so important to backup your data as the TT is not supplied with a backup on th eCD.

There are other threads and posts in this forum that will explain how to make a backup if you are unsure.

Regards

As this is a new model, it will have pretty much the latest software and maps. And your map already contains thousands of POIs. It's only if you have a special interest that isn't included in the built-in ones that you have to search out add-ons.

I suggest that you just relax and enjoy the ONE. It may be another year before the maps change enough to justify the expense of upgrading. Any software upgrades, which are free, will be announced on this forum.

So relax and enjoy!

I'd suggest a manual backup as well as one via Home, as Home sometimes misses large chunks of the data off (great backup eh? Confused ).
There are details all over this forum; if you do a search for "manual backup" you should find instructions.

Also, some of the POIs that come with the unit are OK, but many categories are simply awful (All the 'Doctors' and 'Dentists' are in Dublin on my "latest" maps!).
You cannot edit the built-in ones, but you can add loads of your own from many places on the web. A good start is here! http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtompoi.php

You might also want to add the Speed camera POIs and warnings from this site too. They cost £2 a month, but you can set up your go to actually speak the speed limit to you as you approach a "safety" camera.

Other things you might like to try are alternative navigation voices and map colour schemes, and you can also customise the start-up and shutdown screens to be whatever picture you like.

Take some time to browse this forum and the "yourNAV" TomTom forums, there's loads of other stuff to customise your One (and loads of experts to help you out when you get stuck!) Thumbs Up
