Hello all,

I am currently running tomtom6 on my n73 and using a HS-BO1AS bluetooth gps reciever. The main problem I am having at the moment is the length of time it takes to connect to any satellites from a cold start. The manual say 60 seconds (90%) but it seems to take forever sometimes. Is this the same with all gps modules or is it just mine that is slow?
Any recomendations for a better GPS reciever?
I would ideally like to be able to hard wire into my car and have an external arial that I can hide so you can't see it at all but the main thing would be to have a faster cold start.
Thanks

For a start make sure you are stationary when trying to acquire a position fix, if you are moving around then any GPS unit will have a long hard time working out where it is.
If you want to bury the GPS you will be best to get one with a proper On/Off switch i.e. a slider, this way it can be left on all the time without having to press buttons etc.
I would also go for a SiRF-III type receiver, you will probably find that it still works even in the glovebox - only get the external aerial if you find you really need one - Mike

The Holux GPSlim 236 is worth looking at as it supports all your requirements, it is still available from some suppliers - I have two of these and they are great devices. There is the newer Holux 240 which is smaller but I have not tried one and am not too sure about an external connection (should an aerial be needed) - There are review write-ups on a number of devices including those I mention, go to the reviews/ gps hardware/ bluetooth section (its to the left margin of this page).
Remember SiRF-III, True on/ off switch, and external aerial connection and you won't go far wrong - Mike

Thanks again.
When I said external arial I didn't mean the type that fits on the outside of the car, I was meaning the type that fits up inside the a-pillar down the side of the windscreen. Any info on these as well would be apreciated as well
