I've wired up my Haicom 203 GPS mouse so that it is always switched on in order to help speed up fix times. The mouse is mounted in the back window of my hatchback.

Since the weather has turned cold, I've had to scrape ice off the car windows a few times, and I've noticed a small patch around the GPS mouse where the is no ice or frost, so I guess the unit must be slightly warm all the time.

Is there likely to be any long term effects from having the mouse powered up all the time?

(Assuming your car's battery is good enough to nurture the mouse) there should not be any adverse effects. Those devices are designed to run 24x7 over many years.. And who knows - maybe the mouse is also contributing to quicker windshield defreezing times ...

I'd go even further than Lutz did. I'd think that you're far more likely to damage the GPS mouse by letting it get very cold and damp than you are by leaving it powered and hence warm.

Moisture does nasty things to electronics.
