Does anybody have any opinion, based upon technical knowledge or personal experience as to whether it is better to have the receiver stationary whilst attaining the First Fix?

I dont use my GPS system much, a 2210, TTN2, Fortuna GPSmart BT receiver, but when i do i normally just switch it all on, and get going. After all, getting out of my home town doesnt require directional assistance, and i normally now what general direction to take in order to get to my destination.

Some days i get a fix within a few minutes, some days it takes about 10. The other week, driving over the peaks, Congelton, Buxton, Sheffield etc it never managed a fix, yet there was probaby the best view of the sky it was ever going to get. I must admit that the weather was attrocious, i was driving in the clouds (literally) on three of the main peaks of the journey.

Anyway, to cut a bit a drivel short, here are my salient points....

1. Stationary or not when getting first fix?
2. Stationary or not when getting first fix after moving maybe 100 miles since last time the receiver was on?
3. Stationary or not if the weather is bad, whilst getting first fix?

p.s I checked the FAQ's and what is GPS but couldn't find any info. Thanks in advance...

Jon - (about to upgrade to GPS 2.09 from TT cos it will stop me having to choose GPSmart BT twice)

Most if not all receivers will obtain an initial fix faster if stationary. Older receivers such as the Navman 3000 Jackets were particularly bad at obtaining a lock whilst on the move regardless of sky view etc. The more sensitive receivers including the Leadtek's and Bluettoth devices are less fussy in this regard but will still aquire lock faster if the vehicle remains stationary.
