Garmin i3 Version 7 to Version 8

My Partner & I have a i3 each one has version 7 the other version 8 maps, I have tried moving the gmapsupp.img file from one unit to the other (Using a card adapter) but the unit then thinks that it has no maps, reinstalling the original gmapsupp.img file puts everything back as it was with ver 7.
Does anyone know if there is a way to make the i3 see the newer map file?
