SIRF II or SIRF III ?

Would I notice any real benefit/improvement if I replaced my Fortuan Clip On SirF !! for a newer SiRF III chipset model ?

Yes. SSIII acquires a signal much, much faster and can hold a lock in marginal conditions where a SSII receiver would lose signal.

I'm having a "back to basics" rethink about my sat nav. Juggling between

Keeping CP5 on my 2210 or using my TT 3 on my 2210 but buying a new SIRF III reciever.

Upgrading to TT5 and a SIRF III

or just buying a Mio 510/TT One

Or even TomTom 6! If all you use the PDA for is nav then an all in one is a great solution. The TomTom ONE is good value and has SSIII for about £170 currently.

If you use the PDA for other stuff, perhaps even apps such as Memory-Map then get a SSIII GPS to suit, Bluetooth is my favourite.

Yep, I only use my PDA for SAT Nav and I like my BT as well. I can place it anywhere in my car, in the boot and plugged into a power socket. But a dedicated system has its attractions

Right...I just read GPS site and I think they are referring to next stock on 1/1/07.

Happy to ask in the TT forum but perhaps you know what I need for TT6 in terms of packages. There seem to be two packages one at £149 and another at £99. Is this usual and I presume the £149 is for the basic TT6 with major roads of Europe and £99 is for the EU street level maps ? Its seems a dumb question but various sites have confusing descriptions of the product offers

Topgazza, I had to make a similar decision recently. I have an aging HP 2210 and used it for TT5 (and earlier versions of TomTom also). When TT6 came out it looked as though it would be a little too much for the 2210 to handle - although others have reported that it works, it seems to run slower and freeze from time to time. I didn't know at that time that TomTom were going to bring out updated maps for TT5 (they have never done this before) so I faced the choice between buying a new PDA to run TT6 or buying an all in one device. I eventually decided to buy a TomTom One v2 and have been using it since October without any problems. I am absolutely delighted with it, and it's a lot easier to use than the PDA solution. I have a Brodit vent mount which brings the screen to a better position for viewing and entering data. Of course there must be mapping errors, but all the ones around my home town which were present in TT5 seem to have been corrected and I haven't found any new ones yet (I have the Europe version which uses NavTeq maps, and apart from the absence of rivers etc, I think they are better).
The SSIII receiver is a revelation...fixes are much quicker and I can even hold a fix when I go indoors. I can see far more satellites than with my old GPS receiver in the same position.
I have absolutely no regrets about abandoning the PDA

I have a couple of options around the 2210 and a very cheap TT 5.21 possibly with street maps of the EU. Just bought a Holux GPSlim 236 for £33 new as well. I think I will look at a TT One after seeing how that goes. I won't be sorry to see the PDA go but I am looking forward to SIRF II though whichever solution I end up sticking with. Can't seem to find TT 5 seamless EU maps though...
