I mean't: It of course does NOT boot far enough for the computer to see the Nuvi as a drive and so therefore unable to reflash the firmware or remove anything.

Can someone please explain to me why, having screwed up one unit by installing (too many?) POIs, and Garmin sending them a new unit, they then do exactly the same with the new one. Confused

In view of the many reports of dead units after installing the POIs, I would have thought it somewhat foolish to do it again! I'm surprised Garmin don't refuse to replace a 2nd unit under these circumstances.

Didn't know that this was the cause at the time. There were no warnings when installing the POI's from either here or the Nuvi. Only after fried again did I decide to investigate further

I had a C510 which kept locking up after POI installation and had to be exchanged. I now have the Nuvi 300 and have loaded several POI's on it without any problems at all, so far anyway.

I download and save the POI's to my hard dive, then use the Garmin POI loader to install them to the SD card in the Nuvi.

As the SD card is found as an extra storage device you can just take the SD card out if there are any problems or delete them straight from the SD card instead of the Nuvi itself.

By doing this the installation this way seems to stop any corrupted files if there are any from messing up the Nuvi simply take out the SD card from the unit or delete the Garmin file on the SD card which is where the POI's are stored.

Remember to back up all the files on your Garmin device before you do anything

I hope this helps

Regards, Pete

The Garmin contact number is:- Free Phone 0808 238 0000 (within U.K.) or if the unit is still under warranty then take it back to the supplier that you purchased it from and ask them for an exchange.

There has been lots of threads on here about crashing Nuvi's and I have experienced this twice with two returns to Halfords. Garmin are blaming this site, especially the POI's, saying they are corrupt. I have to admit, I downloaded some POI's from here just before the machine failed with its "loading maps" error.
This is quite a serious allegation and I am sure that many ex owners of Nuvi's would welcome some answer to this. Can this be taken up with Garmin Support please so others will know whether they can or cannot use the downloads from this site?

I have e-mailed Garmin with regards to the question of a maximum amount of POI's before any problems if known, But i am still waiting for a reply from them.

I will post the response when they get back to me.
