|
|
I have an old version TomTom One still on version 5.40 of the software and the maps that came with it. I've been watching the discussion of the new versions of the software and the maps that have just been made available. The discount on the map upgrades runs out at the end of the year.
So what's the verdict - is it worth upgrading or not? Are the map changes worth the cost? Do the foibles of the new software (not being able to switch off speed limit warnings etc) make it a pain?
I'm happy with mine as it is apart from a couple of map erros that I've come across. But apart from that I don't have any problems. Is it a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? |

Irrespective of whether you get new maps or not, I'd install HOME & upgrade your firmware. There are a few changes in the menu layout, you can do a couple extra things, and it supports the OGG file alerts too...... |

I am in same situation...
I am likely to buy the new GB map in the next couple of days but have no interest in the new software. For my unit (300) I think the ONLY new feature of any use would be "navigate to Lat/Long" and I'll live without that, to avoid all the new "features" that make the unit worse in my opinion.
E.G. flashing incorrect speed limits, extra steps to do what I want like "What time do you want to arrive", Rearranged/ hidden menus, won't turn on and off with ignition, slower screen redraws, and all the Hell that "Home" may bring me.
It works for me just as it is! (as would the ogg files if I could be bothered with them!) |

Is it possible to upgrade the maps without upgrading the software? That would seem to be the best compromise for me.
I had a play with a TomTom One v2 yesterday and found the same thing with the menus. Why on earth have they made common actions more steps to do? Clear route, enter a postcode, moved deeper into the menu. Crazy. |

Well I've bought and downloaded the new map, but TomTom Home won't let me install it because I'm still on the old version of the application. Am I going to have to upgrade, or is there a way around this? |

I think you will need TT6 software (available free) to read your new maps. If you were running the PDA version of TTN5 you would have the choice of updated version 5 maps or, if your PDA is compatible, upgrade to TTN6 and run updated version 6 mapsin

No you DON'T need to have v6 software to run the new maps. Still no sign of my new SD card so I still haven't done it, but DennisN HAS gone back to previous software after installing new maps.
I believe you can extract the maps manually from the download .cab file too. |

So is that the way it's done - upgrade application and maps and then regress application? I did wonder about extracting the maps from the cab files. And I noticed that the files in there are dated Sept 2005! |

Oh Andy, I didn't realise you were a Luddite!! OGG files really are the dog's b.....s. You'll be burning books (or RTFMs) next.

Yes, but NOT to v5.xxx - it was only 6.020 and although it ended the ignition on/off problem, it still had the rotten speed limit feature, so I went back (forwards) to v6.522. Not that me coming in at this late stage will be of help as the cheapo offer turned into a pumpkin at midnight!
Happy New Year, everybody. _________________ Dennis

Not a Luddite at all!
I have installed the ogg files several times in order to help sort out problems for others, and as I'm in the process of creating some new ones for the site, they are on and off my Go all the time. I've also installed various custom menus, splashscreens, colour schemes, upped and downed my software version, I've even downloaded "Home" (I even installed it briefly too!)
But for my own purposes, I prefer the quiet chime of "Polite 2", thanks very much! |
