Hi,
I noticed that earlier this month it became legal to use and FM Transmitter.
Will garmin start shipping the 660 with this feature enabled?
After all, it is enabled on the US version.
I've asked the question of Garmin UK and will post their response as soon as they respond.
Unless anyone else is aware of the official word?
Thanks,

Hi,
I asked Garmin the samw question & here's the response that I got:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
As the FM transmitter is illegal to use in some countries in Europe, the
nuvi 660s that are sold in Europe do not have the FM transmitter hardware
installed inside, because of this there is nothing that can be activated by
a software update (as there is no FM transmitter inside the unit).
We are aware that the law has recently changed in the UK, however it is
still illegal to use FM transmitters in some countries in Europe. We will
not be including the FM transmitter in future Nüvi 610 or 660's as these
units (European models) were designed to not have them. We may however include them in future released products.
Best Regards

How about buying a US one?
Can I still use the TMC i.e. will it work over here? _________________ Nuvi 660, VW GOLF

Most likely not. The TMC licence is hard wired into the receiver, you need a different TMC receiver for the US than you need for the UK _________________ Lutz

lbendlin - not strictly true (most of Garmin's FM receiver are interchangeable between the US and Europe), but certainly a US 660 will not simply work in the UK.
To work, the customer would need to:
1. Buy UK / European maps
2. Buy a UK Trafficmaster lifetime subscription
3. Potentially buy a new GTM21 (which would come with the subcription listed above)
This would not be cheap, and a lot of work just to get the FM transmitter functionality, which although not a cheap unit, still isn't the best way to get the audio into the car stereo.
The reason for needing a new GTM21 isn't about frequencies issues, it's actually because in the US the radio signal is so strong that there is no need for a separate radio antenna which can be positioned for best signal - with the general problems with receiving a signal in the UK, there is no way a GTM20 (US version) will be able to pick up a signal at all in the UK. |

It's such a shame the 660 doesn't have the FM transmitter enabled / installed for the uk. I think with this feature enabled it would push me over the edge into buying one. _________________ -----------------------------------
