Having only ever used tomtom nav and mobile before, but finally decing to buy the other half a tomtom one, i want to know what chipset the gps kit of the ntomtom one is (ie is it sirf star III so i can hide it a little out of site, and it still work hapily)

Yes, the latest TomTom One uses SIRFStar III, and very good it is too! I can get quite a good fix indoors, some way from the nearest window.
