If you have an Infra red GPS unit the receive all beams checkbox must be selected to see the device, use other wired nmea device and select the com port that matches the irda - Mike

Mike,
I think he's refering to the occasional problem with PDAs where having 'receive incoming beams' active up the GPS software. I've had this on Holux cradles and a ThinkNavi one too. Seems most prevelant when reciever is on COM 1 through the base. It's not necessarily app dependant either. Had this with Destinator and with Tom Tom on mine and workmates' devices.

I always just switch it off anyway these days. Can't remember the last time I wanted to receive anyone's incoming beams!

This issue affected all devices that had iR and were using COM1 for the GPS as that port is shared by the iR receiver. If the 'Recieve incoming beams' was ticked then COM1 was not available to the GPS Receiver.

I too assume this is what the OP meant as I've never heard of a GPS that used iR to communicate?

The Ipaq-1910 had a strange arrangement where by communication with the GPS receiver used IrDA (nothing else worked correctly at its launch - not too sure if this was ever supplemented by a cabled device - the serial port connector was wired back to front IIRC).
Haicom came to the rescue with a GPS equipped cradle that used IrDA to transmit the data to the PDA (part number P2253).
Assuming WesternEntertainer had an Ipaq-1910 to configure the IrDA "Receive all beams" would have to be ON to work with this set-up.
I would agree though for "normal" PDA's the receive all beams often needs to be selected to off to enable the Com port to be used for the wired GPS units - Mike

My 1910 with irda cradle works perfectly with "receive all beams" switched off.
