Mio C710 bug - (and I didn't even upgrade it yet)

Apologies if this has been covered, but I can't find it...

Well with all the problems people seemed to be having with 3.2, I decided to hold off on the update.
I gave my c710 to my dad for a trip away, and hes now back with it and has managed to break it good.

On starting miomap, it goes as far as "starting" in the bottom corner, then freezes. Eventually comes up with the following message:

"Error
MioMap has failed to gracefully close GPS communication last time, please soft-reset your PDA"

But neither soft or hard-resets do any good - anybody else had this problem?

I've tried to re-install the software from disc, but get
"A navigation device has not been detected. Please connect your PNA to your PC and restart Setup" - but windows finds it ok as a pocket pc.
Miomap Updater tells me to install usb drivers, but device manager shows drivers up to date

I don't have access to bluetooth atm,

anybody got any ideas?
